The lack of market regulation as well as coninuous trading is a big factor in cryptocurrencies extreme volatility.

One of the causes of the extreme volatility in crypto markets is that they operate without interruption and are of course virtually unregulated. It is up to the exchange operators to police things like order book spoofing and stuffing, wash trading, etc... This trading environment creates not only the opportunity for market manipulation strategies but also intervals of time in which liquidity is very low consequently amplifying their effects. For example right now (Saturday 2nd September @ 6am GMT) most crypto assets are taking a beating with #Bitcoin down 9% in 4 hours without any major bad news. What is most probably happening here is that big volume traders can move the market substantially particularly during low liquidity periods to 'harvest' retails traders' stop orders and over leveraged portfolios. Some may even have insider knowledge of where these stops are clustered but I don't have any proof to substantiate this claim. It's just a speculation. Until national market authorities regulate cryptocurrency exchanges we can expect these cycles to continue 'ad infinitum'. Corollary: if you are a bitcoin trader and cannot monitor your trades full time don't use stop orders and don't over leverage your portfolio. You'll most probably be wiped out.
