http://www.iijournals.com/doi/abs/10.3905/jpm.2017.43.4.005 Finance cannot become a rigorous science (in the Popperian or Lakatosian sense), however it can still operate as an “industrial science”. This article describes the scientific method by which industrial finance discovers through experimentation, and avoids false discoveries. http://www.iijournals.com/doi/pdfplus/10.3905/jpm.2017.43.4.005

Finance has been as much about marketing as it has been about making money by those who can. Most of the people in the field can't. But it is hard to prove anyone wrong. Especially when the marketing brochure bears heavy PhD credentials.

Great article. I agree, going forward, software programs, and the people that make them will continue to dominate the trading and investment industry.

The origin of these programs can be from a mix of disciplines. Maybe, again, like in playing other games, we could let the game itself teach us how to play the game. Whatever we design, a strategy's payoff matrix will keep the score.
