A visit to the world’s No 2 super computer

Today I visited the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou and had a full tour of the Tianhe 2 super computer. Developed by the People's Liberation Army National University of Defence Science and Technology, the Tianhe 2 runs at an amazing 33.9 Petaflop/s and can burst up to 54.9 petaflop/s (quadrillions of calculations per second). Without wanting to appear too much of a geek (I am), this was the biggest highlight of my 5 years in China. However, this highlight will soon be surpassed next month, as we will be able to upload our data sets and run some analysis. https://lnkd.in/g4mmJbV

Hi Aradhna, yes, this was an amazing experience for me. Better yet, is that I can go back and even access the system for data research purposes. So all very exciting.

I'm amazed with the new Volta chip that we can get nearly 1 petaflop per node now

Why is running your data on a super computer superior than renting time on aws or Microsoft cloud ? Why did your strategies have to wait for this opportunity rather than getting processing anywhere?

Just because I can. This is about passion and not need. We already use alicloud for strategy development and testing.

But it is not every day that someone, and certainly not me, gets the opportunity to go in the same room as a the worlds No 2 Supercomputer, let alone utilise such a powerful beast.

For me, this is exciting and I love this opportunity presented to me. My first computer was a zx80 back in 1981. Since then I have always had a profound love of technology.

Maybe the first command I will try and run on it is:

PRINT "Hello World"

Just because I can......

how many computing hours or processing power do they allocate to you? How much does it cost to lease? What operating system and software will you run your tests on?
