Very interesting.

Apart from 2015 - 2016, the only other time liquidations have outpaced launches 2 years consecutively was in 2008 - 2009.

BTW is this data for US hedge funds?

This could be because of a lagging effect. Continuous outperformance of the market may force the funds to liquidate. Following a market correction/crash investments start flowing into funds. It'd be good to get more data though.
