Gregory - Algo trading is a very broad term; algos range from simple automated order management to complex market making strategies and are implemented in everything from C++ to Python. Your background will also somewhat dictate where to point you.

Instead of going the book route, there are any number of academic white papers if you are inclined to the more theoretical and articles in various trading magazines to get you started. If you can provide a little bit more detail in what you are looking for, I will check around to see what references I have used over the years.

1) Ernest Chan, Quantitative Trading -- A must-read for any Algo developer.

2) Urban Jaekle, Emilio Tomasini, Trading Systems -- How to develop an Algo step-by-step. Highly recommended.

3) David Aronson, Evidence-based Technical Analysis -- The theory of testing trade strategies. A classic.

+ Robert Harris, The Fear Index -- worth reading for any trade system developer.

Question is: What's your ultimate goal - do you want to get yourself iPhone (or Samsung-Asus, or Aquaris-Vodafon), or do you want to make one.

Machine learning for trading is a great class at Udacity. Plus the Ernie Chan books mentioned above and anything he's written in his blog, and maybe Michael Halls-Moore's blog and books.

Many thanks to all of you for those responses. To reply to Scott Boulette, my background is purely stocks/index/ETF/Brent future and options proprietary trading however when I was in interactivebrokers.com I worked with real-time stocks and options algo market-making and automated risk (Greeks) management (without getting involved in the code).

That said what I interested is automated market-making and intraday orders/stop loss orders (triggered by any signal could be Momemtum and/or fibo and/or volumes and/or others...). I would be interested to see an example of code in a white papers or a good introduction book. Hope this is a bit more clear.

I almost forgot: Does someone know if there is a good University Master or PHD focus on algo trading?

Good question. This is a topic in evolution and most of the good stuff is not yet published.

Inside the Black Box - by Rishi Narang is a great introduction. Probably the best way I've come across to get a feel for how algo traders build and deploy strategies.

The Quantopian platform can then help with example code in python - you can see members' strategies and edit/copy/backtest your own.

Market making in particular is tricky because a lot of the players keep cards close to their chests. PM me if you want to chat in more detail - happy to help.

"Algo trading" simply means a systematic aproach, assisted by a computer. Just start learning systematic aproach (trend following, momentum, stat arb ...etc), then either learn how to program, or get some gut in India to program it for you.
