Another consideration when building these earnings based strategies is to look at the size of the expected move built in by the markets implied volatility, and you must then compare that to the spot price of the underlying. If the expected move (can be estimated by the price of a straddle plus 10%) represents a very high percentage of the spot (I.e. The market has priced in a very large move if the expected move is in excess of 10-15%), the probability that the price will then move two SDs is in actuality quite unlikely and there fore selling iron condors at 2 SDs in this situation offer good probability of success.
