I totally agree that buy and hold is a fallacy. It is an interesting approach to look at volatility from the perspective of price being above or below the SMA. It wasn't clear to me if the results are just looking at the SPY or the individual symbols?

The moving average I'd not showing us a trend, the moving average is a result of the trend....

I agree wìth Vlastimil. MA is a lagging indicator.

Anything using "average" is a lagging indicator. I thought this was a rudimentary lesson.

@Jerold, it was, but a lot of people do not understand the issues caused by volatility and the use of sentiment to trade. In one word, you must trade independently of volatility and short term trends. This does not mean totally abandoning charts and the like, but just using them differently. I am looking at charts more as a way to tell where the price of XYZ has been, but not where it is likely going to go to. I use averages and Bollinger bands (I like bollingers) to show moves that are beyond the expected range. The rest is empirical and based upon a philosophy of stock selection, entries + exits, and long term goals. This works just fine for me.

Nice article Edward. Thank you for sharing. Completely agree that with a lagging indicator the returns will be degraded compared with buy and hold for any given (in hindsight) trend. MAs are clearly not the best to identify the trend therefore. However can I ask what you do use to determine the trend and to inform you when to be looking for longs and when to be looking for shorts?

When you can measure volatility using a SMA, its often too late - or you do not know for how long time this volatility will last.
