Bob, great article and this problem exists not only for back testing but for real-time analytics required in HFT trading. FPGAs cannot be integrated/updated fast enough to capitalize on the deep pool of data that is constantly generated and can enhance alpha (in other asset classes too).


I would be curious to understand the cost of this setup as there are alternatives. My group developed a real-time risk solution solving the I/O bound issue (thus achieving 99% CPU run time), a common misconception even of CTOs of major banking institutions. To address this issue, we implemented Kove (memory mesh, storage based) and McObject (embedded DB) and were able to complete (not just load) 4.35 billion transactions consisting of 13TB data on just 4 quad servers in just over 8 minutes. This configuration cost less than 250K and has been further improved since out tests in 2013. Quantum Computer D-Wave are part of the game now .. this are not easy accessible > 15 Mil USD .. are already in the TOP 10 banks .. on the way to trade or already in positions . .. this will be a game changer .. I will try maybe next month to aces one ..
