How Prime is the order flow? How to understand broker’s source of liquidity

Over a year ago I had written an article discussing the differences between DMA, ECN, STP, etc. But this article goes much further behind the scenes into defining Prime Broker, Prime of Prime, etc. The deeper question how how does a prop trader, fund manager, etc really know they are getting direct market access? How to police your own data feeds and execution times from your broker? I personally think it starts with having an automated system that you know the entry/exit points, particularly an intraday system. Then you can establish a baseline in which you know across 1000s of trades / lot sizes how fast/efficient your execution should be.

In order to be a Tier 1 prime broker, you need a banking licence in your respective jurisdiction to issue securities, connect with central banks, etc.
