What kind of software are you looking for? For trading or for analytical research?

What do you want to use the software for?

If you are looking for backtesting trading strategies then QuantConnect does have a GUI for the reporting and stats.

I am currently checking out Quantopian, a site where you can create your own strategies in python. It works only on US equities, has pricing/fundamental data for 5000+ us companies and has a good backtester. It works for me, as I can code my strategies.

The backend engine used by Quantopian is Zipline which is open source.

I made many a research (equity research) systems from 1992 onwards, but I am yet to see an open source research tool. Putting up such a site is not a big job, it is the content which has to be continuously refreshed/updated, and that is the key driver of a good research site.

Hope this helps.

I'm glad that Kaustabh mentioned https://www.quantopian.com. We also actually released a research tool just a few weeks ago, in addition to our existing backtester, paper trading, and real-money trading platform.

Our research tool is built on IPython. In your IPython notebook you have access to all of the Quantopian data sets, access to your backtest results, and the ability to upload your own data sets for investigation.

I used Quantopian/zipline two years ago and recently QuantConnect. But I decided to create a personal trading platform because I think writing algorithm in internet in so insecure. Traders' algo are as important as their life and then it should be secured in their own hands firmly.

You can check my trade and research screenshot at:

I will make it a as freeware some day.

Why do you want it to be open source? There are plenty out there but I am not sure if open source is the way to go.

Balu. Don't know. Maybe via Mono. We are using pure C# so not problems with port. But Mono doesn't have WPF port so it will be available without any GUI.
