The idea that leveraged ETFs occur daily slippage due to their inherent leverage, frequency of trading and somewhat opaque structure is relatively old one. There have been many papers on this and really there is no investment value in "investing" in them. On another note, indeed there are many relative value ( long short) opportunities that appear to be profitable however in practice this is somewhat of a mirage - cost of borrow or even lack of any make many of the opportunities unrealistic or limited upside.

On another note, there are leveraged ETFs like SPXL that have hugely outperformed their underlying index. That is because they not only use leverage for the underlying but also sell volatility in those underlying. In other words, they are certainly more than triple SPX performance. However, since risk is in the underlying volatility ( realized as well as implied). I had tried to find some research on those but really found nothing... However, I do see potential "investment" value in those because the short volatility component can provide a lot of excess return beyond the pure underlying leverage...
