Can anyone recommend a charting/graphics, extension, .dll for visual studio ,C#,net? I am curious if anyone knows of any free or open source solutions. It will be used for both research and charting

It is free for non-commercial use and works great.

Why the emphasis on free/open source when you can have the best for very reasonable licensing terms? I suggest you give a free trial to ChartFX:

That's the best I know for charting/graphics. If you want a full suite of UI components - i.e. you also want grid controls, etc. not just charting/graphics - for .NET, the best ones are DevExpress, Infragistics, and Telerik. Those are more expensive ($800 - $900) albeit the price is well justified by the software value in my opinion. Still ChartFX charts are the best looking ones, and very easy to produce. Indeed, some people use ChartFX along with the other UI component libraries just for that reason.

I think there is also a WPF version somewhere from Microsoft.

I would like thank everyone for their contribution. My programmer and I will be going through the list over the next week or so and I will let you know which one(s) we think our best. I wanted a free open source solution because I assume that there is a solution out there that does not require me to spend money or get a license. I am not a fan of licensing software. I prefer to do a one off purchase. I have heard good things about telerik and chart FX if I were to choose to go this route. I had a bad experience with Modulus.

I use SciChart. Not free, but not expensive also. Really fast. WPF compatible. I have tried many other charting packages (the old Dundad, xceed, etc.), this works the best for price charts, IMHO.
