In a test of two chart pattern types, the uglier patterns outperformed the well-shaped ones. Read the short article here: http://thepatternsite.com/ugly.html

A pattern that describes a real market process will outperform those that are only pleasant for human eye.

However if a pattern is used by many heavy weight traders then it will outperform others regardless of its beauty or even conformity to real market processes.

I think that the Ugly double top or Ugly double bottom performs better, at least based on Thomas' review because the real name for an Ugly top or bottom is a parabola, or very nearly another conic section type, like hyperbola, saddle shape, etc. These do perform better than the actual criteria Thomas has setup for double anything. Not only do the patterns better represent growth decay when modeling, or for that matter, matching other natural phenomena that have symmetrical properties, but in terms of the real market, real money, etc., a higher low to the left of the significant low, or a lower high to the right of the significant high signifies retest, failure, and strong hands establishing large positions at a distance further away from the swing high / low on the retest.
