Hey everyone, On my latest project, I have a system trading HFT scalping trades on the forex market, on majors. The challenge is the speed of execution and liquidity. On backtest and demo live forward, some trades last 0 seconds up to 3 seconds. some others more but my challenge and question is : can 0 seconds trades up to 3 seconds trade realisticly be successfully executed by the broker at a retail trader level which means retail broker with vps for example? Technology here is key, any suggestions, advice or comments ? Also, will the broker not ban this type of HFT trading for a retail trader? Finally, what would be the best trading environment setup for such a strategy? Connecting to the LMAX for example with a colocation of vps box near financial servers? Thanks. Quentin

6 to 8 years ago it was doable but nowadays highly doubtful.

The best day I ever saw was when BBG said, "China might raise interest rates." Suddenly the FX markets went crazy. Noone could price that. The robot made $150k in 3 minutes. I was way over the limit so I shut it down as per protocol. We didn't want people getting wise. So yes at times this strategy has done amazing things. But only if it were 2006 again. Now everybody has ribotised that which means it no longer pays. No fat in that trade. And if you think there is then you are speculating. And that's fine so long as you acknowledge that what you are doing is not arbitrage.

It is berally expected that in 3 sec price changes will move out from the spred channel on the beginning of the deal. Means you will always buy on higher price then sell. Or sell lower price then buy back.

@Cameron Wild , thanks a lot for the insight and valuable suggestions you made ! Very interesting to see actual real proofs of working scalp and how the market changes over time which impacts the strategies out there..

@Sergey , yes that's the challenge. but not the strategy either in itself..

I have taken in account all your comments guys, thanks again.

Now this opens to a new debate I believe, if scalping at a retail level or even industry level is getting harder and harder, we have now moved into HFT trading but latest results also show that market leaders have reached maybe what is the top of their profit potential for the moment, for some profits even started declining in the HFT race world.

SO, that being said, 2 topics :

1- Can we still say today that scalping (or HFT) remains the most profitable and fast automated strategy approach to make a lot of money in the short run ?

2- What is according to you "the new" scalping approach out there? In other words, the key in maintaining quick steady growth to a strategy ?

I am also working with my partner on a low latency system which indeed for a live trading environment will be much more easy to run.

Let me know about your thoughts :)

Last point : do you find backtesting on some "data" still helpful and reliable today as a testing tool for your system? In such markets, I tend to find live adjustments more interesting although you do loose sight of the long term consequences... pros and cons.

Quentin.
