Amateur #traders are in a constant dilemma about how often to trade. They cannot accept to trade less and commit the dire offense of trading frequently without the trading edge. CommexFx is a retail broker hence the article talking about over-trading being dangerous as costs are higher. The lower your average profit, the bigger the fixed cost of the trades in terms of percentage of profit, hence the bigger the edge required for shorter-term trading. I teach beginners to aim for a least 10x the spread so the edge required is more achievable. But there are so many products to trade that it doesn't limit the number of trades per day that much.

A very good FX trader many years ago told me there are three positions, long, short and flat. I have never been told this by any other trader, the mentality is often you have to be in it to win it, so I guess sometimes its better not to trade.

Alex nailed it. If you're not one of the big boys, you should stay out of intraday trading.

Another implication of frequent trading is the psychological demands of dealing with volatility mark to market effects. In other words, it is more likely to breach rules and stops in shorter timeframes.

@ Andreas, I have very little trading experience but re psychological demands understand the problem.

Outright trading is the pits, if I had to trade I would only trade relative value looking for well behaved positive carry trades. You take larger positions re rv trades re full use of Var, but I suspect you are less lightly to get stopped out in short time frames.
